The Newservice
After almost a full year on the air, technical problems at KFTY bubbled to the surface. With no air-conditioning in either the studio or master control, Santa Rosa’s summer heat caused the vacuum tube-replete TK-41c cameras to overheat, the transistorized TR-4 quad tape machine to shut down, and the studio-to-transmitter link to die.
With grit and determination, the daily program schedule continued with a Seventies version of what today is known as “sneaker-net.” The nightly newscast was pre-recorded and driven with the other taped programs to the transmitter building at the summit of Mt. St. Helena.
This 46-minute Newservice of August 6, 1973 was directed by Greg Overton.
